Grand Mediterranean Cruise
Day 1
Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy
Start and end your cruise in the "Eternal City" where the sights from the past are everywhere intermixed with those of a great modern Rome. Visit the Roman Coliseum with it's colorful history, the Pantheon where the vast 142'-cupola is being restored and view Leonardo's masterpiece on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican (left). Enjoy a cup of espresso in one of the many sidewalk cafes along the Via Venito. Visit the Trevi Fountain - drop a coin and make a wish. There is no doubt that you'll learn the meaning of la dolce vita (the sweet life) when you visit Rome.
Day 2
Naples, Italy
Naples, located in beautiful southern Italy, is the country's third most populous city. You'll immediately feel the friendly spirit of this sunny metropolis as you sample its historic sights, fabulous shopping galleria and irresistible cuisine. Mount Vesuvius, the ruins of Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and the romantic isle of Capri's famous Blue Grotto are just a short drive from the city.
Day 4, 5
Venice, Italy
No city in the world is as dazzlingly different as Venice, a seaport built on more than 100 islands. In this magnificent Renaissance realm of canals, bridges and merchants on the Adriatic, gondoliers stand up to sing while they row. Even the buses are boats! You'll never forget the thrill of your first magical moments in St. Mark's Square or being part of the aquatic parade that never ends along the Grand Canal.
Day 6
Dubrovnik, Croatia
This magnificent walled city on the blue Adriatic Sea is an architectural wonder. As a centuries-old trading center, it once rivaled the famed Venice. Today, its amazing history is reflected in its many monuments and museums. You'll find it exhilarating to explore the man-made treasures such as Old Town and the city's famous wall, but don't miss such natural pleasures as the nearby beaches.
Day 8
Messina, Italy
This busy seaport, on the Strait of Messina, has a colorful history that includes occupation by the Arabs in the 9th century A.D. and an insurrection against the Bourbons in the late 1700s. Today this charming city entices tourists with its historical settings , including a museum with works by Caravaggio. Messina also serves as the gateway to Taormina where visitors can experience amazing views of snowcapped Mount Etna.
Day 10
Barcelona, Spain
Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona is Spain's most cosmopolitan city. It is especially well known for its vitality and style, as you will see on Las Ramblas, Barcelona's main thoroughfare. The city, while boasting monuments that are Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance in style, also captivates visitors with its incredible modern architecture. Among those worthy of attention, are the whimsical works of the legendary architect Antonio Gaudí (left).
Day 11
Cannes, France
Cannes is on the Gold Coast of France. While most famous for the seasonal Cannes Film Festival, this seaside city is an international year-round center of culture. We encourage you to take in the view from Mount Chevalier, shop in the markets and stroll along the waterfront of the old port where humble fishing vessels sit in wonderful contrast to the million-dollar yachts. Or take a scenic drive to beautiful Monte Carlo in the Principality of Monaco. Best of all just take the day off and relax in the sun and enjoy the view from the beach.
Day 12
Livorno (Florence), Italy
The port of Livorno serves both Florence and Pisa in the beautiful Tuscany region of Italy. Florence - the cradle of the Renaissance - is a city of treasures. Here you will find some of the world's greatest artworks in the Uffizi Gallery, from such masters as Leonardo da Vinci and Boticelli. You'll be astonished by the magnificent frescoes, ornate cathedrals and Ghiberti's famous doors, the Gates of Paradise. But of all the masterpieces, the one you can't leave without seeing is, of course, Michelangelo's David (left). After viewing the great works of art, go shopping for some more contemporary objects at the shops located in the Ponte Vecchio, just outside of the Uffizi Gallery (mouseover, left).
